What is Bufo?

"Bufo" (now often referred to as Incilius or other genera due to taxonomic changes) is a genus of true toads in the family Bufonidae. When people talk about "Bufo" or "toad" in casual conversation, they usually mean one of two things:

1. Biological Definition (The Animal)
  • Bufo is the old scientific name for a genus of toads.

  • These are amphibians that are usually terrestrial, with dry, bumpy skin, short legs, and a warty appearance.

  • Found worldwide, except in Australia and Antarctica.

  • One well-known species is the Bufo bufo (the common toad) found in Europe.

2. Psychoactive Context (Bufo Toad / 5-MeO-DMT)
  • The Colorado River toad (Incilius alvarius, formerly Bufo alvarius) produces a potent psychedelic substance: 5-MeO-DMT.

  • People refer to this toad as the "Bufo toad" or just "Bufo" in spiritual/entheogenic communities.

  • The venom is dried and smoked for its powerful, short-acting psychedelic effects that many describe as mystical or ego-dissolving.

“I came across this toad, this Bufo, and I smoked this medicine, and it changed my whole life. I’ve never been the same since... It’s almost like dying and being reborn.”
